Paul Louis, a UX/UI sound design and creative director, has been contributing to the auditory landscape since 2016. His work includes designing AVAS sounds for prominent vehicle manufacturers and crafting distinctive sound logos for a well-known payment processing company, kitchen manufacturers and online retailer.His versatility extends to music curation for a leading financial institution and innovative projects for notable software companies. Additionally, Paul shares his knowledge and experience by teaching interactive sound design at HMKW.He continues to push the boundaries of how sound is interwoven with our daily environments and experiences. His approach to sound design is grounded in everyday life, creating soundscapes that are not only immersive but also harmonious, reflecting a thoughtful and holistic perspective in his field.

Artist Statement

Urban soundscapes are often chaotic, negatively impacting people’s health and well-being. This project seeks to mitigate this by introducing a biomimetic sound algorithm inspired by “biophony.” Bernie Krause, a soundscape ecologist, introduced this concept, illustrating the structured sound organization in natural environments (Krause, B. (2012). The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places. Little, Brown and Company). In nature, animals utilize distinct frequency ranges to avoid overlap, fostering a balance within their habitats.

This project’s algorithm, drawing from biophony, aims to apply this principle to urban vehicle sounds. Leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology and sophisticated sound algorithms, it enables vehicles to autonomously select their operating frequency ranges. This reduces sound masking and cultivates a harmonious urban acoustic environment. The initiative not only confronts technological challenges but also advocates for ecological mindfulness in urban sound management, aspiring to cultivate healthier future cities.The project aligns with the University of Geneva’s (UNIGE) work on Interactive Sonification of Human Movement Qualities. It involves tracking people’s movements and producing corresponding sounds, mirroring how vehicles would interact in urban settings. Additionally,the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and their fabrication lab play a crucial role in creating prototype orbs, vital to this endeavor.

This project addresses urban sound chaos by developing a biomimetic sound algorithm inspired by biophony, the structured organization of sounds in nature . Using IoT technology and advanced sound algorithms, the goal of this project will be to create a well-sounding, inclusive urban sound environment.

Project Summary
We were tasked with the challenge of blending playfulness, fun and ease of use with the seriousness of finance within five weeks.
It’s been an incredible journey to define and mold the essence of CCV into the sound identity it now possesses. The result is a brand identity that perfectly balances these contrasting elements, creating a unique sonic and visual experience that truly captures the spirit of CCV.
